LED Lights for hiker’s spirit

Is a unique lighting installation that had been created for the annual Maggies London Night Hike which took place on September. A company created the interactive light installation at Horse Guards Parade, using colour change luminaries to up light the architecture of the long archway leading through to the courtyard. The luminaries were connected to a control system and microphone, and programmed to react and change according to the noises made by the hikers as they passed through the tunnel. In addition, the courtyard was filled with hundreds of white helium balloons each illuminated with a single LED. Hikers were encouraged to write messages on the balloons which were then released at the end of the walk.

LED Spot Modules Selected for McDonald's Test Store

The new McCafe McDonald's franchise in Dundalk, Maryland is using LED Spot Modules. With the deployment of both selected down lights and wall packs, the store is testing the next generation of high quality LED lighting. The franchise owner wanted a sustainable, energy-efficient lighting solution while providing a warm and inviting look and feel to the newly built store.

"The franchise owner has very exacting requirements and is known as a thought leader in the Baltimore area," said Gus Apostolou, technology engineer. "In order to provide energy savings, eliminate the mercury used in CFLs and provide a better quality of light, the natural selection was the Xicato module delivered in the Wila and Duraguard fixtures."

The original specification called for 54-watt CFL fixtures in the dining room and food delivery area were replaced with 36w modules, which yielded energy savings of 61,484.69 kWh/year. Additionally, the LED modules contain no harmful mercury that is present in CFL lamps; it is rated to last 50,000 hours, compared to the CFLs' 10,000 hours, making LEDs a maintenance-free solution.

The quality of light is a critical component for the upgrade. As McCafe color schemes became warm and inviting, the lighting was selected to match. A 3000 Kelvin color temperature was employed rather than typical 3500 Kelvin. The tight color point consistency and natural light of the modules provide a rich, warm look that helps accentuate the finishes and earth tones selected for use through the store.

Welland to replace all street lights with LEDs

Welland, Ontario, is to replace 4300 street lights and 2410 decorative fixtures with LED lights.

The City Council in Welland, Ontario, Canada, has voted unanimously in favor to completely replace the city’s streetlights with LED fixtures.

The Council also approved the capital financing cost of CAN$2.74 million through a debenture. This will be paid back by utilizing the savings from the program. The LED retrofit program will reduce street-lighting energy costs by $221,553 and street-lighting maintenance costs by $159,250 in year one.

The first phase of the project will include the replacement of 4300 Cobra-head high-pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures, and is expected to be completed by April 2012. Phase 2 will consist of the replacement of 2410 decorative fixtures.

The estimates of the total cost of operating its current HPS-based lighting system will amount to almost $18 million over 15 years, which is the “estimated true cost of doing nothing.” With the switch to LED lighting, the City will save a total of $6.8 million in operating costs. After paying the various charges including debt repayments, the city will save a net amount of $2.38 million over the 15-year term of the agreement, and will reduce its annual carbon emissions from 2.1 million kg CO2 to 541,000 kg CO2. The project document says that the City might also benefit from carbon-credit sales.

Welland staff led by David Ferguson, Manager of Traffic, Parking & Bylaw Operations, began reviewing LED lighting in 2007 when staff identified that the current street-lighting infrastructure was becoming outdated and in need of replacement.

When the entire project is completed in December 2012, the municipality believes it will become the first in North America to have completely converted its entire street-lighting network to LEDs.

LED Lighting for the amazing underground salt cathedral of Columbia

The Zipaquira Salt Cathedral, located in Cundinamarca, north of Bogota, Colombia, is subject to a remodeling process which involves the substitution of the lighting system with LED technology. The total investment cost is about 2 million $ and 100 000 LED lighting points have been installed; compared to conventional lighting systems these products will generate 70% of energy savings.

The Cathedral is situated 180 meters deep and thanks to the show originated by the RGB projectors, enter in the place becomes what seems to be a journey into the center of the Earth. Reddish tones bathe the walls of the tunnel that leads to the main vault; moreover religious images are illuminated with blue and white.

According to the statements of the mayor of Zipaquirá, the purpose of this investment was to make the Salt Cathedral becoming a memorial at the height of the different touristic destinations in the world, and at the same time reaffirms the appointment of wonder of Colombia.

Project is expected to be completed in December, when it will be installed a smart equipment as placed in the National Stadium of Peru, which will illuminate some areas of the Salt Cathedral as the applause and shouts into the light and sound camera.

The equipment installed has the ability to be programmed by a computer and generate up to one million colors. The renovation included a new sound system, the same as the lighting system use to be synchronized and produce shows like those seen in Las Vegas and around the world.

The project was conducted by a Chilean company using all LED technology. This new lighting transforms the Salt Cathedral into a Colombian worldwide icon, and in environmental terms, it reduces energy consumption and pollution.

Colbert Report Covers Light Bulb Debate but sadly Neglects LEDs

While recently watching an episode of The Colbert Report, I was surprised and pleased to see that his guest for the evening was Dale Bryk, director of Natural Resource Defense Council’s Air and Energy program, the topic being light bulbs. Specifically, Bryk was on the show to set right some misconceptions about the government’s 2007 lighting standard that required light bulbs become 25 percent more efficient. According to Bryk, “The reasoning for it was simple: our light bulbs waste 90% of their energy as heat and after 125 years on the market, it’s time for a re-tooling. Following in the footsteps of other efficiency standards that have made our refrigerators 90% more efficient and required our cars to get more miles per gallon, this lighting standard will put better bulbs on the shelves and cut our nation’s electric bill by $10 BILLION a year. It’ll also zero out the pollution from 30 coal-fired power plants.”

However, certain members of Congress claim that this new standard limits consumer choice and have thus proposed the “Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act” to reverse the standards.

Bryk refuted the claims while on the show, and on her blog, she states, “The irony, of course, is that [the “Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act”] would reduce choice, not increase it. Not to mention that reversing this standard would also derail plans for new job-creating lighting factories and take as much as $200 per year out of the checkbooks of every U.S. household.”

Colbert and Bryk also discussed the pros and cons of incandescent and CFL bulbs, and while thinking it was great to see the light bulb debate getting some national coverage, I was disappointed that LED lights were not even mentioned. Colbert complained heavily about CFL’s need to warm up, and the cold-colored light they cast. Bryk responded by saying that new CFLs come in “warm white,” and that post warm-up, they’re actually quite similar to incandescent bulbs. We can wonder why she didn’t bring up the fact that LEDs require no warm up time, come in a variety of colors, and last even longer than CFL bulbs. But maybe we’ll just have to get Colbert to give us our own segment to explain it.

Formation of India SSL special interest group

A special interest group focused on SSL in India will address LED materials, equipment and manufacturing issues.

A special interest group on high-brightness LEDs and solid-state lighting (SSL) has been formed in India. The group’s main focus will be on materials, equipment and manufacturing issues to further promote SSL – through cost reduction, quality improvement, supply chain development, and industry promotion. The new group is comprised of industry leaders in the HB-LED market.
The Indian Government has provided incentives to the country’s still emerging energy-efficiency industry, including LED lighting, under the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE). Recently, the Government of India announced the reduction in excise duty on LED lights/lighting fixtures from 8 percent to 4 percent, on par with CFLs.

The special interest group will host an industry forum at the upcoming SOLARCON India 2011 (November 9-11) in Hyderabad, which will focus on SSL technology with speakers from LED manufacturers, LED suppliers, researchers and others. Attendees are expected including professionals from academia, government and lighting manufacturers. The group is also encouraging the development of an ecosystem for India’s emerging SSL manufacturing industry.

The LED is now in our lives

LED lighting is a challenge for organisms with ecological attitude.

• Advantages of using LED technology

> Energy savings up to 80%.
> Light more similar to sunlight.
> No ultraviolet or infrared radiation
> No hazardous substances such as mercury or lead
> Durability of the unit up to 50,000 hours, reducing maintenance costs.

• LED light revolution
The LED lamps, which give a nice white light, consume less and last many years, they are called to replace incandescent light bulb.

• Advantages of LEDs

Size: with the same light, a LED takes less space than an incandescent bulb.
Brightness: the LED's are brighter than a bulb, and besides, the light is not concentrated on a point (like the filament of the bulb) but the entire LED shines equally.
Duration: one LED can last 50,000 hours; this is like six years turn on constantly. That's 50 times longer than an incandescent bulb.
Consumption: LED light used to replace traffic lights consumes 10 times less with the same brightness.

LED Lights Light up the World’s First Biodegradable Car

Kenneth Cobonpue is a well known Filipino designer praised for his work with bamboo, rattan, and other natural fibers. Until recently, Cobonpue mainly worked with the interior design world, creating award-winning furniture, lighting and home décor pieces for his design firm.

Recently, Cobonpue started into the automotive realm, creating the world’s first biodegrada
ble vehicle, called the Phoenix. Though the engine and wheels are made of longer-lasting materials, the “skin” that houses the vehicle is built mainly from bamboo and rattan, and can easily be reabsorbed by the planet. “This project attempts to unveil the future of green vehicles using woven skins from organic fibers mated to composite materials and powered by green technology,” says Mr. Cobonpue. The skin is designed to last 5-10 years, and can easily be replaced as it wears out. Additional features on the Phoenix include eco-friendly, energy efficient LED light bulbs, which provide illumination internally and externally.

Though it has a little Swiss Family Robinson feel to be tooling around town in a bamboo roadster, this invention—along with the inclusion of LED fixtures—shows that forward-thinking designers are prioritizing a cleaner planet. We’re proud that LED lights are a part of developments like this one.

Why should you choose LED lights for your home?

While CFLs were strongly supported in the past, LED interior lights are clearly the superior energy-efficient choice for current and future times.

Starting in January of 2012, consumers will no longer have the ability to puchase 100W incandescent light bulbs, and by 2014 incandescent light bulbs will be fully banned. Earlier this decade, CFLs were praised as the green option, but LED lights are now surpassing them in performance and reduced power consumption. LEDs have a life span of 50,000 hours or more, which is ten times more than the 5,000 hours of light provided by CFLs. LEDs also consume as little as half the power of CFLs. A few more reasons why LED home lights are a better choice for you and your family are listed here:

1. LEDs are RoHS certified, which guarantees that in addition of energy-efficient, no harmful components were used in their manufacturing. CFLs are not RoHS certified because they contain mercury. While some may feel that 1-5 mg of mercury is an incremental amount, but represents enough mercury that most states have deemed it unlawful to dispose of CFLs with regular trash, thus requiring special recycling. This suggests that it is an area of major concern. It is also unclear if there are health risks associated with constant exposure over a long period of time.

2. CFLs emit 30 BTU/hour of heat, while LEDs emit a only around 3.4 BTU/hour. One of the distinct advantages of LED lights is that their low heat generation, which virtually eliminates fire and safety hazard risks. While CFLs generate less heat than the 85 BTU/hour that incandescent bulbs produce, 30 BTUs is still enough heat to pose a safety or fire hazard. Furthermore, LEDs are durable and can handle jarring and bumping. CFLs are as fragile as incandescent bulbs.

3. If you install LED lights in your home, you will not have to be worried with the performance issues of CFLs. There is evidence that the cycling of turning CFLs on and off could actually shorten their lifespan. Also, rather inconveniently, they can take time to warm up and reach full brightness, whereas LED lights turn on and provide their full lumens instantly.

While contemplating your conversion from incandescent lights to a more environmentally friendly option, it seems clear that the best choice is LED home lighting. LEDs not only last longer, consume less power and are less expensive, but they also are the safest and best performing option. LED lighting truly is the light of the future, while CFLs are quickly becoming an outdated option.

Nick Gelpi present a futuristic art LED Lighting in Seattle.

It’s in the north of Seattle that Nick Gelpi the designer of this art LED project has presented the futuristic feather-weight house, with an interior illuminated by LED lighting solutions. This house has been created by flexing two dimensions into three with the interior illuminated by flexible LED lighting strips.

The house is created by cutting patterns into flat sheets of plywood which when “pushed” into position similar to old fashion popup books, is transformed into a three dimensional house complete with skylights, columns, buttresses, windows and vents.
Once the house is raised the lightweight interior walls will be illuminated by attaching flexible LED Light Strips onto the interior of each sheet of plywood.

The final structure which reminds one of an open ended Quonset hut is neither bullet proof nor expensive to build, instead it is a demonstration of what can be done with a simple piece of plywood and well thought out planning. “We’re glad to have been chosen to play a minor role in this exciting project” states Barquin.

DOE Gateway report indicates viewers prefer LED-illuminated artwork

DOE’s second study on track lighting using LED lamps as replacements for halogen bulbs showed that in addition to energy savings, viewers preferred LED-illuminated artwork.

The US DOE has published a final report from a retrofit of track lighting used to accent a gallery exhibition at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) in Eugene, Oregon. The project involved the replacement of fifty-four 90W halogen narrow flood lamps with 12W LED lamps, allowing energy savings of over $500 per year and a payback period of 9 years.

This is the second such project this year, with the first Gateway study reporting superior quality of light and lower energy use using 12W LED lamps relative to 15W and 23W CFLs and also 90W halogen lamps. This new study is similar in that 12W LED lamps were again tested. Fifty-four lamps were installed in January 2011 in the Coeta and Donald Barker Special Exhibitions Gallery to illuminate the digital photographs from artist Chris Jordan.

Energy use and ROI

The 54-lamp LED system uses 14% of the energy and offers a ten times longer lifetime than the halogen lamps. The present value life-cycle cost of the LED system was $12,124 compared to $16,670 for the halogen system.
Energy use for the 54 track heads LED lamps was estimated at 1403 kWhr per year compared to 9851 kWhr with the estimated number of halogen lamps required for the same lighting effect (44 lamps). At the electrical rate of $0.06 per kWhr, which is low because of the local hydroelectric power source, this translates to an estimated savings of $506.84 per year for the gallery.

Simple return-on-investment (ROI) occurs in year 9 of operation at the $0.06 per kWhr rate. At $0.10 per kWhr, simple payback drops to less than 6 years; at $0.15 per kWhr, payback occurs in less than 4 years.
Payback rates are expected to improve further as the industry works to reduce the price of LED replacement lamps.

Preference for LED-illuminated art

In this study, a separate comparison was set between the museum’s standard halogen lamp and three LED replacement lamps from three different manufacturers to asset the acceptability of LED lighting. In the nearby Gordon Gilkey Study Center Gallery, sets of similar art were mounted on a single gray wall, including an oil painting, a black-and-white photographic print, and a color-checker card. Every set was illuminated with one of four lamps, the halogen, one of the LED lamps, all with color temperatures ranging between 2638K and 2821K.
Artists, museum staff and visitors answered a survey regarding smoothness of light pattern, appropriate warmth/coolness of light for the art, color rendering, visual clarity and suitability of the lighting for the artwork.

The artists and museum staff preferred a different LED lamp than the visitors did, but neither party preferred illumination of the halogen lamp. Observers said they appreciated how the LED lamps improved the ability to see blue colors.

Interestingly, the rank order of preference of lamps for color rendering did not correspond to the rank ordering of lamp CRI. This indicates that a new or modified color rendering metric may be needed for lighting designers who are illuminating artwork in galleries or similar environments.

RGB LED Lights Ignite Tunnel

The Tunnel of Questionable Enlightenment is an amazing interactive RGB LED art project displayed at Burning Man 2011.

The artists erected 100 7.25-foot tall steel arches lined with 6400 color-changing LED strip lights in the shape of a question mark. Participants walked through the arches and when reaching the end, come upon four large wheels. Spinning the wheels allowed participants to control different aspects of the LED strips’ lighting: lumens, speed, pattern and color. This interactive element gave participants a chance to affect the experience of people walking through the tunnel after them.

The purpose of this project was to encourage participants to think about the spontaneous and unknown aspects of life. The artists write, “We don’t always know where we are going, or even perhaps, from where we have come. The path is unclear, yet at times the insights along the way are profound. Our environment colors our perception, and our perception in turn illuminates the path. Others who have navigated this questionable transformation are there to help us along our way, and in turn we assist those that are waiting in the dark dusty alcove inside.”

In the streets of Barcelona

If encountering the flashing eyes of your own cat in a dimly lit hallway weren't startling enough, imagine walking down a city street, only to be faced with a pack of demon-eyed pussycats gazing menacingly back at you in the darkness.

It’s the Art collective Ojo Señor which recreated the dastardly effect of tapetum lucidem, or eye shine, on posters studded with LED lights that were hung around the streets of Barcelona. The posters feature 10 mm color LEDs (in red, blue or white) which are powered by 3-volt batteries placed behind the paper. The collective first had the idea one night when they saw a cat staring at them with shiny eyes.

"Upon its head, with red extended mouth and solitary eye of fire, sat the hideous beast whose craft had seduced me into murder, and whose informing voice had consigned me to the hangman." Edgar Allan Poe, The Black Cat

New Law to Essentially Eliminate Incandescent Lightbulbs

New energy efficiency standards, taking effectives as of January 1st, 2012, will phase out incandescent light bulbs.

Although the law does not expressly ban the use of incandescent lightbulbs, it does require the said lightbulbs to be 25 to 30 percent and at least 60 percent more efficient by 2014 and 2020, respectively, which will eliminate the bulbs falling short of the standards. However, specialty bulbs, three-way bulbs, chandelier bulbs, refrigerator bulbs, plant grow lights and others will not be restricted by the new law.

A lot of consumers are unhappy with the new law, as the alternatives cost more than incandescent bulbs. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), consumers can choose a CFL or halogen incandescent in substitution. Prices of those types are about US$ 3 each and an equivalent LED costs about US$ 40, much higher than that of basic incandescent. As a result, the law has triggered certain consumers preferring incandescent bulbs to stock up.

For the purpose of making it easier for consumers to compare different kinds, starting in January, 2012, light output of lightbulbs will be measured in lumens instead of watts and indicated on new packaging.

Guangdong Government Strives to Popularize LED Lighting

Officials of the Guangdong Provincial Government stated that they are working towards the goal of 30% of LED interior lighting by 2015.

Street lighting represents the breaking point for the government to popularize LED lighting: during the next two years, there will be over 600 thousand LED street lamps lightening up the night sky of the Pearl River Delta. The government will implement the LED plan starting in 2012.
Currently, there are 200 thousand LED street lamps in Guangdong. The Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Province indicated that they will first subsidize enterprises for their LED lighting adoption, and then phase in LED lighting among citizens. In addition, the Science and Technology Department has been considering subsidizing investment institutions and supplying households with free LED lights in order to further popularize LED lighting.

Wind Bulb, the LED light bulb fitted with a mini wind-mill

Wind Bulb as the name says, is a LED light bulb which feeds in an environmentally friendly way using wind energy. From the top to the bottom, it consists of a support compatible with the current screw sockets, a vertical turbine, a wire and the lamp itself at the end. Under the action of wind, the turbine rotates and generates electricity which is then transmitted to the lamp via the wire.

Both designers Wen-Cheng Hsiao and Jin-Dian Cheng have chosen the technology of LED light because of the low power consumption. A rechargeable battery is located at the same level as the lamp to store the generated electricity when the device is not used. This concept has won a LiteOn Award.

Wind Bulb is suitable for lighting a patio or a ventilated place. However, the lamp can be removed and used as a flashlight.

Really practical, isn’t it?

France: 135 million of Euros for LED projects

The government will provide 135 million of Euros as part of the nanoelectronics call for proposals launched last September. This information had been announced by the Ministries of Research and Industry and the General Commission for Investment.

These projects of research and development involve industrial from CEA and LETI. Four of these eight projects are coordinated by Soitec and have interests in materials for light emitting diodes (LED) and high brightness semiconductor substrates for components to low or very high integration density. Three are by Altis Semiconductor, about the technology for digital circuits of power, nonvolatile memory and heterogeneous components. The last one is supported by ULIS and aims to produce multi-element infrared sensor at low cost for applications such as intelligent lighting.

Russian poultry farmers start to use LED lighting system

A Russian company recently actively introduced LED lighting systems in agriculture. The specialists of the company developed lamps to be used for house lighting with different types of bird keeping.

Poultry farming is a very specific sector of agriculture, there are particular demands for lighting systems: lamps should be waterproof, have the possibility of changing the brightness from maximum to zero, guarantee optimal heat rate for LEDs in the conditions of intense dustiness and the ambient temperature up to 35 C+.

Successfully organized production of LED- lamps satisfies the strict requirements of poultry farmers; nowadays tens of poultry houses in Russia are already equipped with this innovative lighting system.

The expected progress of LEDs

According to the analysis made by Frost & Sullivan, the market for LEDs will dominate the lighting industry. This technology, supported by the current regulations for energy conservation, will give to this business revenues which could reach nearly 2 billion $ in 2017. Many opportunities are still available to the global R & D in the field of LED efficiency in lumens per watt, performance color and temperature management. Although more expensive than compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), LEDs show an energy efficient and thus less costly consumption.

In Serpent River, Canada, LED will create jobs.

In late August, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency returned a decision in favor of the project, stating that, “after taking into consideration the screening report and taking into account the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, the authorities are of the opinion that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.”
In Serpent River First nation the project will be located roughly halfway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie along the north shore of Lake Huron. Here would be establish Migisi (eagle) Illumination Industries, an LED light assembly plant.

The development would encompass a 25,000-square-foot warehouse, in addition to servicing for power, water, septic and telecommunications, a parking lot and loading area of 4,800 square meters, and an access road corridor.

The project is expected to create 59 jobs and generate $2 million in revenue within the first five years of operation.
The First Nation now must designate the parcel of land slated for the project to commercial zoning to move forward. Band members will vote on the decision on Oct.4.
If the membership votes in favor of the change, a 25-acre parcel of land would be given commercial designation, and would allow for the establishment of the light plant, as well as additional economic development initiatives.

TokyoFlash Uses RGB LEDs to Make Tricked-Out Time Piece

The "Wasted Time" watch by Tokyo Flash uses RGB color LED display to create a futuristic and changing watch that takes time to the next level. Although the frenetic aspect of the surface would have you believe otherwise, "Wasted" carriers can actually tell the time very easily. Touch a button on the side of the watch and it will show a twisted display of dancing light. The current time blinks for a short period, allowing the wearer to read it easily. Otherwise, Hours are displayed on the outside in the same position as the numbers on a clock, then groups of five minutes on the minutes circle in and only in the center are singles bottom up. A Lapse between 18:00 and 24:00 can be initiated for the night, the lights will slowly light up the screen and then go out every 15 minutes when the animation mode is on.

Not old-fashioned watches, “Wasted” is USB rechargeable. All you have to do is connect it to your computer for a few hours, and you’re set for a full month of LED-fueled, time-telling bliss. There are 300 charges in one battery and the battery is easily replaceable.

Seattle City Light’s New LED Streetlights in Shoreline and LFP

Seattle City Light (SCL) has started to replace the old high-pressure sodium streetlamps with new LED lights in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park neighborhoods as of Sept. 20.
The more recent LED technology uses about 48 percent less energy than current high-pressure sodium lights, and they are expected to last three times as long.

The project cost, originally estimated at between $25-24 million, has seen a price drop in the last year to $20 million for all 41,000 residential street lamps. A small portion of this cost will be covered by federal stimulus funds and SLC will cover the rest.

The Shoreline and LFP installations, which will be completed by mid-October, and will be noticeable to residents immediately because of the difference in light color.
The new color temperature that was selected, based on positive feedback from the pilot testing in several Seattle neighborhoods, is a white light, similar to moonlight, in comparison to the sodium lamps, which give off an amber glow.

Since 2010, SCL installed 6,000 of the LED lamps throughout its coverage area. By the end of 2014, 41,000 new streetlights will be installed throughout the coverage area, with 2,150 of those being placed in the Shoreline and LFP areas.

Tiny infrared LEDs could find a home in ultra-thin multi-touch screens

A new infrared LED can be used in conjunction with detectors to create ultra-thin touch-screens. We've seen infrared used in touch-screens before, most notably in recent e-readers. But, the new LED solution is complex enough to work in a multi-touch tablet, while being as space-saving.

Emmy Awards Go Green with Solar Panels and LED Lights

The 2011 Emmys were special this year, the TV awards event made waves because for the first time in its 63-year history, event producers used clean energy sources and LED fixtures to light the red carpet.

Celebrities walked, posed and smiled beneath 200 high-powered solar panels as they entered the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, which hosted the event on September 18th. The 50-kilowatt system contained four separate solar canopies, which surrounded 400 feet of red carpet, giving renewable energy a highly visible position during the Emmy pre-show. LED light bulbs illuminated the red carpet area and consumed only 20 percent of the power typically used by conventional fixtures. To top it off, “This year’s red carpet is made from 25,000 square feet of locally-sourced recycled carpet, produced by a LED-certified carpet facility.

“Made from 50 percent recycled content, the carpet will be donated after the event to the Ronald McDonald House Long Beach and to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles,” according to Environmental News Service. It’s nice to see the entertainment industry giving back to its community and the planet…let’s hope this is the beginning of a big trend.

LED packaging getting into its own

As the Led industry has gained enough momentum and reached a critical mass, it has enticed equipment and material providers into developing dedicated solutions for LED manufacturing.

The Yole Development report on LED Packaging, predicts more that $2 billion will be invested over the 2011-2016 period in new equipment for LED packaging.

Packaging normally accounts for 20% to 60% of a packaged LED total cost and represents the single largest opportunity for cost reduction.

Today LED packaging is still done using mostly retrofitted equipment and relies on existing technology solutions and materials to improve LED cost of ownership and performance.

While this allows LED manufacturers to benefit from decades of research and development and investments in the IC industry, but is not optimized for the specific needs of LEDs.

Dedicated solutions are emerging from existing and new players that will allow significant reduction in LED manufacturing cost with improved yields, throughputs and material efficiency.

The future of lighting

Amid the ongoing shift to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), which use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that are touted to be 10 times more energy efficient, comes the “ultra-efficient” alternative to LED: The organic LED or OLED, which works by letting electric current pass through one or more extremely thin layers of organic semiconductors--not the silicone-based ones used by LEDs--which are placed between an anode and cathode and then encapsulated in a coverglass.
