The state Department of Transportation is working on a project to make traveling in downtown Scranton easier. The state is starting to replace traffic signals at 50 intersections with LED lights. Most of the installed signals are about 50 years old and need to be replaced by modern signals.

The advantages of the new traffic lights are easy to find. First of all, LED traffic lights are much brighter than the old signals, this helps drivers in by night and at bad weather conditions to notice the signal light and could avoid accidents. Besides, the new lights are synchronizes, the timing of the traffic lights can be adapted to the rush hour or during the night and decrease the waiting time. The project is going to be realized until March 2013.
